Itinerary Highlights:.
Day 1 Sunday May 20-Arrival in Avignon
Check in at our hotel in the heart of the medieval city of Avignon. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure for some exploration on your own or relaxation. Tonight we will enjoy a welcome dinner. D
Day 2 Monday May 21-Avignon-Pont du Gard and Chateauneuf du Pape.
The day will begin with a guided tour of the Pope's Palace - the largest medieval palace in Europe and a Unesco World Heritage site; we will also visit the Pont d'Avignon and Rocher des Doms Park. Free time for lunch in town.
In the afternoon, we will take a drive through the countryside to view the Pont du Gard , the Roman aqueduct considered to be an engineering marvel and we will stop for wine tasting in Chateauneuf du Pape. Return to Avignon. Evening at leisure. B
Day 3 - Tuesday May 22 - Mont Ventoux, Vaison la Romaine and Carpentras
This morning we will head to the hills of Mont Ventoux and visit the popular Provencal market of Vaison la Romaine. This town was a flourishing center during the Roman Conquest of Provence. You will find many archeological relics—In the districts of Puymin and la Villasse you will discover Roman dwellings, Roman baths, an antique theatre and a 2000 years old bridge over the Ouveze River. After lunch we will head to Carpentras, a major market town in the middle of a fertile plain. In the middle ages it was the capital of the Comte Venaissin and until late 18th century was under Papal State control. In the 13th century, after being persecuted in the kingdom of France, Jews sought refuge here under the Papal State. A synagogue was built in 1367 and is the oldest one in France that is still in activity. B/L
Day 4 - Wednesday May 23 - Luberon Villages
Morning we will be spent at leisure in Avignon. In the afternoon, we will head to the pine scented hills of the Luberon National Park and visit the lovely perched villages like Gordes, the ochre-colored Roussillon and Menerbes...
We will return to Avignon for dinner and lodging. B/D
Day 5- Thursday May 24 - Arles and the Alpilles
Today we will explore the Alpilles Hills and the town of Arles. We will marvel at the enduring Roman Arena. After lunch, we will visit the picturesque perched village of Les Baux de Provence and go for a tour of St. Remy de Provence, birthplace of Nostradamus. Here we will be able to tour St. Paul de Mausole, the convent turned hospital where Vincent Van Gogh spent time recuperating while living briefly in Provence. B/L
Day 6 Friday May 25 — Aix en Provence
Our day will be spent experiencing the delightful town of Aix en Provence, birthplace of artist Paul Cezanne. We will enjoy a guided tour of the town to admire its many squares, fountains and Renaissance architecture and visit Cezanne's atelier. Return to Avignon for dinner and lodging. B/L/D
Day 6 Saturday May 26
After breakfast tour ends. Au revoir et à bientot. B
